How sticky proxy IP and rotating proxy IP work
by Arthur
2024-06-11

Sticky proxy IP and rotating proxy IP are two common proxy server configurations, and their working principles and uses are different. The following explains how they work in detail:

Sticky Proxy IP

How it works:

Session persistence: Sticky proxy IP assigns a fixed IP address to each user during the session. This IP address remains unchanged throughout the session.

IP address allocation: When a user first connects to the proxy server, the server assigns an IP address to the user. This IP address remains consistent during the user session until the session ends or times out.

Session end: Once the session ends (for example, the user disconnects or the timeout period is reached), the IP address will be recycled for the next user.

Uses:

Crawling and data crawling: When performing tasks that require long-term connection, maintaining the same IP address can avoid being detected by the target website due to frequent IP switching.

Login and authentication: For operations that need to remain logged in, using sticky proxies can ensure session continuity and will not cause re-authentication due to changes in IP addresses.

Rotating Proxy IP

Working principle:

Timed switching: Rotating proxy IP automatically switches the user's IP address within a certain time interval. For example, every few minutes or after each request, the user will be assigned a new IP address.

IP pool: The proxy server maintains an IP address pool, and each user's request will randomly assign an IP address from the pool.

Dynamic allocation: A new IP address is assigned for each request or at a certain interval, so that the user's IP address is constantly changing.

Uses:

Avoid restrictions: When performing high-frequency requests, the constantly changing IP address can avoid being blocked by the target website due to frequent requests from the same IP address.

Anonymity: The constantly changing IP address improves the anonymity of the user, making it more difficult to track user behavior.

Comparison and selection

Stability: Sticky proxies provide higher stability and consistency, and are suitable for tasks that require long-term connections, such as logging in to accounts, maintaining sessions, etc.

Anonymity and avoidance of restrictions: Rotating proxies provide higher anonymity and more effective avoidance of restrictions, and are suitable for tasks that require a large number of requests and fast data crawling.

The choice of which proxy to use depends on the specific application requirements. If the task requires a long session and a stable IP, you can choose a sticky proxy. If you need a high frequency, a large number of requests in a short period of time and high anonymity, you can choose a rotating proxy.
